The International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobiais is observed on May 17th and aims to raise awareness of violence, discrimination, and repression of LGBT communities worldwide, which in turn provides an opportunity to take action and engage in dialogue with the media, policymakers, public opinion, and wider civil society. This specific date was chosen to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1990.
On this day, at FPA Sri Lanka headquarters, Executive Director Ms Thushara Agus addressed the gathering of staff and gave a brief overview of what the day represents and spoke on stigma and discrimination faced by these communities. She also stated that Comprehensive Sexuality Education will play a big part in creating awareness and in turn acceptance of them into society in Sri Lanka. Ms Madu Dissanayake, Director Public Affairs, Policy and Advocacy facilitated an interactive question and answer session on issues pertaining to LGBT communities.
