The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Women and Gender of the Parliament of Sri Lanka launched a curriculum on Comprehensive Sexuality Education at an event held at the Sri Lanka Parliament on the 25th of May 2017. The curriculum which was produced by the Ministry of Education will be piloted for Advanced Level students of schools in the Western Province and will gradually be expanded to all provinces.
The Hon. Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya, Hon. Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala, Hon. Minister of Women and Child's Affairs Chandrani Bandara, Hon. State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, Hon. Deputy Minister Sumedha Jayasena, Hon. Chairperson of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Women and Gender Dr. Thusitha Wijemanne and Members of Parliament Hon. Bimal Ratnayake, Hon. Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana and Hon. Chathura Senaratne as well as the Chief Minster of the North Central Province Hon. Peshala Jayaratne, Minister of Education of the Western Province Hon. Ranjith Somawansa as well as several members of Provincial Councils and senior government officials were present at this meeting.
FPA Sri Lanka was commended for their support and assistance in this process and was invited to provide feedback on the curriculum. While the curriculum could be enhanced in several key aspects; FPA Sri Lanka would like to congratulate the Chairperson and all members of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Women and Gender on this initiative. It is indeed a victory for all those who have been advocating for the Comprehensive Sexuality Education in Sri Lanka for many years.
