Maternal and Postpartum Care

Frequently asked questions on pregnancy, breastfeeding and emergency contraception.

Can you get pregnant while breastfeeding?

Yes, it is possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding, especially if you are not exclusively breastfeeding or if your baby is older and you're having longer gaps between feedings. While breastfeeding can delay the return of your menstrual cycle, it is not a foolproof method of contraception.

Can you breastfeed after taking emergency contraception?

Yes, you can breastfeed after taking emergency contraception. The small amount of levonorgestrel that passes into breast milk is unlikely to cause harm. However, if you are concerned, you can pump and discard milk for the first 24 hours after taking the pill, though this is generally not necessary unless advised by your doctor.

Can emergency contraception affect my breastfeeding routine?

Emergency contraception has little to no effect on your breastfeeding routine. However, some women may experience a temporary disruption in their milk supply or slight changes in milk composition. If concerned, consult with your healthcare provider.

When can I start using contraception after childbirth?

You can start using contraception as soon as you are ready, even while breastfeeding. It's important to discuss options with your healthcare provider to determine the most suitable method based on your health and whether you're breastfeeding.

Are there any contraception methods that are safe while breastfeeding?

Yes, many methods are safe while breastfeeding, including the IUD, oral contraceptive pills like Mithuri, implants, and the Depo-Provera injection. Hormonal methods that contain estrogen, like combined birth control pills, are typically not recommended in the first few weeks postpartum as they can affect milk supply.
