Is abortion legal in Sri Lanka?

 

Abortions in Sri Lanka may be done legally only to save the mother’s life. Abortion for any other reason is a serious criminal offence. 

 

Are illegal abortions dangerous?

 

Yes, illegal abortions are dangerous because they are done by unqualified people under unhygienic conditions using instruments are not sterile. There can be serious damage to the womb and vagina, excessive bleeding, dangerous infection and tetanus. The girl may find she is unable to get pregnant again. Illegal abortion may cause death due to these severe complications.
