How effective is the withdrawal method, aka “pulling out”?
If you're not ready for a pregnancy, you might want to think twice about using the withdrawal method (by which the guy pulls out before he ejaculates) as it is not an effective contraception method.
Why? Timing is key, and it's not always easy for the guy to pull out in time. The guy can get overexcited and lose control and you can get pregnant from pre-cum or pre-ejaculation fluid containing sperm.
And remember: it just takes one sperm to fertilize an egg!
How long after having unprotected sex can the emergency contraceptive pill be taken?
The emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) must be taken within 72 hours (three days) after unprotected sex. The sooner it is taken, the more effective it is. It is most effective if it is taken within the first 12 hours after unprotected sex.
It is not to be used as a regular contraceptive.
Will douching help to prevent pregnancy after sex?
Washing the vagina with water, a douche, or any other liquid after unprotected sex won't lower the chances of getting pregnant. Sperms deposited in the vagina can reach the uterus before they can be washed out. Douching does not provide protection from pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.
It's essential to use proven contraceptive methods if you want to prevent pregnancy effectively.
Is unprotected sex ever safe?
No, for two reasons.
Unprotected sex can always lead to an unintended pregnancy. Even during your period, you can become pregnant. Even if you think you know when you are ovulating and avoid sex during that time, ovulation can vary and shift for several reasons. You can be fertile when you don’t expect it.
Unprotected sex always puts you at risk for STIs (sexually transmitted infections), unless you and your partner both have tested negatively for STIs and you know and trust your partner’s sexual history, and know that they are faithful and having sex with only you.
We recommend the use of a contraception method and a condom.
What are the risks of unprotected sex?
Unprotected sex increases the risk of unintended pregnancy and STIs like HIV. Protect yourself by choosing reliable contraception and using condoms. Your future and health are worth it.
Can I get pregnant from unprotected sex, even if it was only once?
Absolutely YES!
Every instance of unprotected sex, accidental, or “just once” puts you at risk of becoming pregnant. Even if you’re on your period – because conception can sometimes occur during menstruation. The only way to avoid pregnancy is to use a contraception method – every time!
Can I get pregnant during my period?
Not using contraception during your period is not a good idea.
Even during your period, there is a small chance you can get pregnant (especially if your period is irregular). This can make it hard to predict your most fertile days. If your cycle is shorter, the chances of conceiving from sex during your period might be higher. Remember, sperm can live for up to 120 hours after ejaculation. The likelihood of getting pregnant increases towards the end of your period.
So, if you don't wish to become pregnant, you should always use contraception.
