Endometrial (Uterine) Cancer

What is Endometrial Cancer?

Endometrial cancer, also known as uterine cancer, originates in the lining of the uterus (endometrium). It is one of the most common cancers affecting women globally and is increasingly prevalent in Sri Lanka. Early detection and awareness are crucial for effective management and improved outcomes.

Prevalence in Sri Lanka

Recent studies indicate a steady rise in endometrial cancer incidence in Sri Lanka.

Risk Factors

Several factors have been identified that may increase the risk of developing endometrial cancer:

  • Age: Women over 55 years are at higher risk.

  • Obesity: Generalized obesity (BMI ≥25 kg/m²) is a significant risk factor

  • Reproductive History: Never having been pregnant.

  • Menstrual History: Early onset of menstruation (≤11 years) and late menopause.

  • Family History: A family history of any type of cancer among first-degree relatives

  • Hormonal Factors: Use of unopposed estrogen therapy (without progesterone) can increase risk.

  • Lifestyle Factors: Physical inactivity, poor dietary habits, and low household activity levels.

Symptoms to Watch For

Common symptoms include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or spotting, especially postmenopausal bleeding.

  • Pelvic pain or pressure.

  • Unexplained weight loss.

  • Pain during intercourse.

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare provider promptly.

Prevention and Early Detection

While some risk factors are non-modifiable, adopting a healthy lifestyle can reduce risk:

  • Maintain a Healthy Weight: Aim for a healthy BMI through diet and exercise.

  • Engage in Regular Physical Activity: At least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity is recommended.

  • Follow a Balanced Diet: Eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit processed and high-fat foods.

  • Regular Medical Checkups: Postmenopausal women should report any abnormal bleeding immediately and discuss individualized screening options with their healthcare providers.
