This World Mental Health Day, on the 10th of October, the global theme is “Mental Health at Work,” focusing on the essential link between mental well-being and the workplace. A safe, supportive environment acts as a protective factor for mental health, while unhealthy conditions such as stigma, discrimination, harassment, and poor working conditions pose significant risks, impacting both mental health and productivity.
In line with this theme, FPA’s Alokaya Counselling Centre has organized a series of informative sessions for staff. On the 7th of October, Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Neil Fernando led a session titled “Everyone's Contribution to Championing Mental Health in the Workplace.”
Statistics show that 1 in 6 working-age individuals face mental health challenges, with stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout being the leading issues. Dr. Neil Fernando emphasized the role of employers in supporting mental health at work, recommending mental health-supportive policies, improvements to workplace culture, and flexible work arrangements. Effective strategies should target work-life balance, access to mental health resources, and encouraging peer support within the workplace.
Tomorrow, the programme continues with “Mental Health Matters,” a Q&A session with Clinical Psychologist Dr. Susil Premarathne, followed by a stress release session through music, dance, and fun led by Aerobic Instructor Mr. Manoj Madusanka.
At FPA, we prioritize mental health and are taking steps to foster a positive and supportive work environment for everyone.
