FPA Sri Lanka commemorates “Founders Day”, today the 15th of January 2020.
In 1953, a time when globally and nationally, multiple pregnancies in short spaces of time, high maternal and infant mortality, poor maternal health were the order of the day and the word “Choice” for a woman was almost unheard of, FPA Sri Lanka was founded by volunteers, who despite their regular professions, gave time and expertise to the cause generously. (Dr. Mary Rutnam, Siva Chinnatamby, Sylvia Fernando, Leila Basnayake and Phyllis Dissanayaka to name a few).
Amidst challenges and opposition, FPA’s mission has continued to gather momentum. Through sheer commitment and dedication of volunteers and supporters, the message of family planning has spread and now the Associations’ work encompasses Maternal Health, Family Planning, Comprehensive Sexuality Education, prevention of STI’s/HIV, prevention of Gender Based Violence, providing humanitarian relief and advocating for the rights of those who are stigmatised and marginalized such as the differently abled and the LGBTQI community.
We continue to work towards making Sexual and Reproductive Health a right to all Sri Lankans! We have come a long way, thanks to the efforts and sacrifices of our founders and forefathers and are committed to continuing this essential work in order to ensure the health of future generations and the wellbeing of our planet.
