A training programme on SRH in Emergencies was held for 25 youth volunteers in the Nuwara Eliya district on the 15th and 16th of September 2022 at the Sampath Hotel, Nuwara Eliya. It was organized by the Nuwara Elia Service Delivery Point of the Outreach Unit under the SPRINT IV Project. SPRINT IV is a humanitarian project providing life-saving SRH support onset of emergencies. The training aimed to educate and train youth volunteers to build their capacity and prepare them as leaders and responders in a crisis.
The training covered various topics coming under the umbrella of SRHiE.
Day 1: The participants gained extensive knowledge of Disaster Management ( By A.M.R.N.K Alahakoon, the assistant director of the DMC in Nuwara Eliya) and the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) provision in a crisis ( By R.V.P. Rajapakse, Consultant at the FPA Outreach Unit). Also, a session on human sexuality, reproductive systems and functions and SRH issues in emergencies (By Dr Lahiru Thanthrige, the medical officer of the RDHS office). It was followed by a session on SGBV by P. Sivakumar, the Senior Manager of the FPA Service Delivery Point in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 2: The second training day included a session on STI/HIV-AIDS and issues in emergencies conducted by Dr Arafath, a medical officer in community medicine. This was followed by a brief but comprehensive session on psychosocial support in emergencies, led by Ms P. H. U. Pathirana, the Psychology Counsellor of FPA Suwa Sewa Centre in Nuwara Eliya. Interactive group activities on strategic development and analysis of a case study related to SRHiE and a discussion on the role of youth in an emergency were coordinated by the Director of Outreach, Mr Rajapakse.
