1. Chlamydia Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common bacterial infection that is curable with antibiotics. While people can sometimes experience symptoms, it is often a “silent infection” with no sign to tip us off to go see a doctor. This is why it is important to get tested regularly and/or when we have a new partner(s). Remember to ask for a throat and/or anal swab if you had oral and/or anal sex because chlamydia can occur in the throat and in the rectum too.If left untreated, it can lead to infertility.

2. Genital Herpes

Genital Herpes is a common viral infection that can cause painful sores that occasionally appear on and around the genitals. Herpes is passed on via skin-to-skin contact.

Once someone is infected with it, the virus stays in the body for life but symptoms can be managed. After the initial infection, which may or may not be noticeable (for some, it might lead to painful sores and flu-like symptoms while others might not experience any symptoms at all)

3. Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a common bacterial infection that is curable with antibiotics. Some of the more common signs and symptoms include irritation when peeing, pain during sex, and/or unusual discharge from the penis or the vagina. Some people will not have any signs for months.

If left untreated, it can lead to infertility

4. Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection passed on during its contagious stages either by contact with an open sore near genitals or the mouth or after the sores have disappeared and are replaced by a rash that is accompanied by flu-like symptoms. Sometimes the sores go unnoticed as there is no pain. Syphilis can be treated and cured through a series of injections given at a clinic; however, if left untreated, syphilis can cause serious complications.

5. HIV

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV spreads through the body and targets the immune system, making it hard for the body to fight off illnesses.

HIV is a virus that can be passed through unprotected sex (vaginal, anal, and oral) or sharing drug injection equipment (like needles) with someone who is HIV-positive. The HIV virus is present in bodily fluids like blood, semen, anal, and vaginal secretions.

There is no known cure for HIV but it can be treated. People who are HIV-positive can and do live long, full, and healthy lives when the virus is managed.

6. HPV

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common sexually transmitted infection HPV is spread through skin-to-skin contact with someone who carries the virus even if there are no visible symptoms. Some strains cause genital warts that can be treated by a variety of methods like freezing or lasering to remove the warts. Other forms of HPV can lead to the growth of abnormal cells on the cervix or in the rectum that can develop into cervical or anal cancer over time. It is important for people who are (or were) sexually active and have a cervix and/or have anal sex to get regular pap tests to screen for abnormal cells. Some types of HPV can be prevented by vaccination.
