Drama Therapy is the systematic and intentional use of drama/ theatre processes to achieve the therapeutic goals of symptom relief, emotional and physical integration, and personal growth. The Diploma Course in Psychological Drama Therapy is facilitated by FPA Sri Lanka under the course direction of Mr. Ravindra Ranasingha, Clinical Drama Therapist.
Participants explore Sandplay Therapy as a key therapeutic tool. Sandplay Therapy allows clients to arrange miniature figures in a sandbox or sand tray to create a ‘sand world’ corresponding to various dimensions of his/her social reality. It emphasizes the spontaneous and dynamic qualities of the creative experience itself. The essence of sand play is non-verbal and symbolic. A pioneering researcher on the technique, Dora M. Kalff saw the sand tray as a “free and protected place" for children and adults to play with sand, water, and miniatures over a period of time, constructing concrete manifestations of their inner world. Founding member of Journal of Sandplay Therapy, Lauren Cunningham stated that when energies in the form of "living symbols" are touched upon in the personal and collective unconscious, healing can happen spontaneously within a person at an unconscious level. As a more harmonious relationship between the conscious and the unconscious develops, the ego is restructured and strengthened.
