Safety 2016 ─ the 12th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion

Safety 2016 ─ the 12th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion was held in Tampere, Finland, from the 18th - 21st of September 2016. Safety 2016 is proudly hosted by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and several partners and colleagues from Finland, Europe and the international community.  The conference is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The conference brought together the world’s leading researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and advocates in the field of injury prevention and safety to debate, discuss and share information and experiences.

In a statement the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL Finland) said “Injuries - violence and unintentional - are a major burden on public health worldwide. While experts in injury prevention and safety promotion recognize the need for action, the cutting edge knowledge and practices from these fields are not consistently applied to policies and programmes in the field”.

The main theme for the Safety 2016, “From research to implementation”, seeks to provoke new ideas and experiences to address this gap.

The research document titled “ Intimate Partner Violence” compiled by Doctors Achini Jayatilleke, LakshmenSenanayake, Sumithra Tissera, Dileep Gamage and T . Weerakkodi which was done in collaboration with the Sri Lankan General Practitioners, was presented at this event by Dr Achini Jayatilleke who is FPA Sri Lanka’s Deputy Director Medical. The background for this abstract was that though GP’s have a high capacity to identify and assist the survivors of Gender Based Violence, in Sri Lanka, they are not trained to provide such services. The study was aimed to assess Sri Lankan GPs’ knowledge, attitudes and skill on GBV in order to identify their training needs.
