Hashtag Generation organised a training programme for aspiring women politicians on the 25th and 26th of June. Joining from various parts of the island and some already representing political parties, participants were educated on effective political communication, campaigning, and challenges they would face when entering a predominantly patriarchal arena. Ms Madu Dissanayake Director Public Affairs, Policy and Advocacy, FPA Sri Lanka was one of the guest speakers/trainers and spoke on the situation of women in Sri Lanka, gender-based discrimination, laws that are currently in place and the importance of women representation in the Sri Lankan Government.
Some of the other key speakers were Hon. Deputy Minister Eran Wickramaratne (Subject -Importance of representation and the role played by women as vital players in uplifting the Sri Lankan economy), Hon. Deputy minister Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya (Subject - Role of a politician), Mr. Sudarshana Gunawardena from the Rights Now Collective (Subject - Effective political communication), Dr. Harsha De Silva (Subject - ‘Leadership), Prof. Jayadeva Uyangoda ( Subject - Politics and Political Systems in Sri Lanka) and Ms Anjali Korale – University of Colombo( Subject - Constitutional Reform and other current developments).
